Since December 2004, the track has been significantly modified in order to improve and meet current safety standards. Included in the first phase of modernisation was an expanded pit lane, new kerbs and a widened main straight. Among more recent changes the back walls were moved to create larger run-off areas. The circuit's main features, however, have been preserved with its 3.602kms / 2.238 miles of track and eleven curves. The most famous part of the circuit is without doubt the 'Corkscrew', a very slow chicane taken at approximately 38 mph and positioned on a sharp downward slope .In 2006, Nicky Hayden (Repsol Honda) took another fantastic victory at his home race for the second consecutive year, while his team-mate Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) finished second and another Honda star Marco Melandri (Fortuna Honda) was third as the Honda factory completed a clean-sweep of podium places.1
