Circuit & Area DetailsThe US Grand Prix takes place in Indianapolis, in the state of Indiana and in the 12th largest city in the US. Travel to the circuit is quite straightforward and easy. Both air and road connections are abundant, so are transportation options provided by the race organizers.
Indianapolis is one of the 'Blue Riband' tracks, which includes Monaco and Le Mans, and makes use of one of the legendary sweeping banked corners and the main straight of the Indy 500 race oval. The new infield section provides drivers and spectators with the more familiar F1 racing circuit, consisting of short straights and corners.
An oval racing is OK for the Indy 500, but wouldn't do for a F1 Championship race. Changes had to made to the Indy circuit, which cost $15 million, adding 12 corners and a pit area. This was the first serious alteration of the circuit since 1909. Even with the Grand Prix track, there is still space for a golf course inside the oval! but the MotoGP bikes are set to role. 1 |
Travel DetailsIndianapolis is known as the 'Crossroads of America', with four major interstate highways that intersect here: I-74, I-70, I-69 and I-65. Also, the I-465 highway is a loop around the city, allowing for easy access into any part of town or to outlying suburbs.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is located at the north-east corner of 16th Street and Georgetown Road, approximately 11km (7mi) north-west of downtown Indianapolis. From anywhere in the city, take the I-465 loop and exit on 16A, Crawfordsville Road, and the circuit is signposted from there.
Parking is available at the track for both cars and RVs, at seven locations adjacent to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. There is also tent camping available in lots 1A, 1B, Lot 2, Lot 3 and Lot 4. However, please note that prior booking is required, particularly for a race weekend. The form can be downloaded on-line from the race organizer's web-site.
The Indianapolis International Airport serves a number of international airlines and domestic connections within the US. The airport is conveniently located and is only a 15 minute drive from the racing circuit. Cars can be easily and cheaply rented at the airport, however, prior booking is recommended for the F1 race weekend.
From the airport take Interstate 465 northbound to the Crawfordsville Road exit. Then, turn East onto Crawfordsville Road and the track is located approximately 5km (3mi) away. Normal travel time from the airport to the track is approximately 15 minutes, but during the F1 race weekend, it may be considerably longer so allow for additional travel time.
Instead of driving from the airport, the race organisers recommend spectators to use the IndyGo bus service, which leaves from the airport and downtown Indianapolis on a regular basis.
